Autonomy of Affect

May 14, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Eugénie Shinkle’s ‘Corporealis Ergo Sum: Affective Response in Digital Games’ in Garrelts, N. Digital Gameplay references Brian Massumi’s Parables for the Virtual: Movement, Affect, Sensation several times. The first chapter of this book (which I possess) is called ‘The Autonomy of Affect’ and opens with a reference to the work of Hertha Sturm (The Emotional Effects of Media). I first read ‘The Autonomy of Affect’ about two years ago and found it quite inspiring, to the extent that it became central my work at the time. It used to be available online as a PDF, but now I can’t find it. You can access it via JSTOR (through the Ryerson Library website) or I can send you the PDF I have, if you’re interested. Also, Parables for the Virtual exists, at least in part, as a Google Book.

Later, in April 2006, I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop presented by Brian Massumi and Erin Manning (‘The Politics of Touch’) – both Canadian scholars – which attempted to illustrate their ideas through movement exercises. The reading list for this was extensive and fascinating, too. Their ideas have been quite central to my work since and offer, among other things, a fresh approach to thinking through a variety of political issues.

I’d like to write more and link to various things, but I have to get going to class so I’ll edit this post later.
